From The Editor: "Anything in your closet worth demoting?"
On a recent trip to a consignment shop, I was disappointed when the clerk told me they would not accept my BCBG dress for consignment due to a small snag in the stitching on the back seam. The clerk suggested that I take it to a tailor for repair and then bring it back for consignment once the small snag was repaired. I have no doubt that this clerk had great intentions, however anyone who is aware of typical tailor prices knows that this would be an all out loss for me.
Unless I could get my tailor to do me a small favor in conjunction with having some of my other pieces fitted, I am looking at typical fees of anywhere of $8 - $12. My consignment take out is 40% and even though it is a $200 BCBG dress; I would imagine they would sell the dress for about 10% of that; at $20 which would have me bringing in $8. All in all, in this instance it is simply not worth the cost of consignment. This presents a very interesting question? What do we do with pieces that require repair or alteration which would not make it worth consigning, yet seem simply too valuable too merely give to goodwill? The answer is a demotion.
Why do we think when we go to the gym, take a trip to the grocery store or walk our dogs our clothing has to be sloppy? Why does all fashion sense go out the window? My beloved BCBG dress that I bought to wear to a friends tropical themed wedding, I've decided to demote it to my weekend errand running dress. When paired with a jean jacket and metallic flats this is a comfortable easy piece that will add fun and fashion sense to any weekend jaunt. The bigger benefit, I actually get to wear the dress that I spent $200 on 2 years ago yet only wore twice! A year from now when I do in fact decided that I am ready to give the dress to Goodwill at least I will feel like I got my moneys worth out of the dress.
